Hello, I’m Claire Mackenzie, your host at Tulach Ard Bed and Breakfast in Grantown on Spey.
I’m originally from the Scottish Highlands of Perthshire. I grew up on a hill farm 1100ft above sea level driving a tractor and buck rake at quite a young age to earn my first income. I’m very much more at home in the outdoors finding our cities to be busier and nosier than ever. It has always been a mountainous life for me and a little adrenaline-fueled too.
Many years on I am the now being put through my paces by my two daughters and husband, Douglas who is from Isle of Skye.
Settling in Grantown
Dougie served as a Met Police Officer in London for 30 years and in 2009/10, we moved back to the Scottish Highlands to make our home in Grantown on Spey.
I had been away for 16 years and we chose Grantown on Spey firstly for its community, location to our families and then all on offer in Speyside, Cairngorms and beyond.
As travellers ourselves we appreciated being only 40 minutes from Inverness Airport and 14 miles from the nearest national railway station. As a result, we have had many friends visiting! I do love it really.
The Community here in Grantown on Spey is quite fabulous.
Our careers span the hospitality industry, tourism and serving the local community in uniform and out.
The next task was to build our bed and breakfast business. Tulach Ard House was built around 1854 with a two-storey outbuilding attached. It’s now a ‘Bed and Breakfast in the Cairngorms National Park’.
We knew we wanted to offer a high standard of accommodation, and so we tirelessly made every effort we could to meet that target and we opened our doors in May 2012.
I had spent many years in Austria where I worked as a tour, ski and mountain guide. Prior to that organising and overseeing the running of events was a part of each role undertaken by myself with customer focus and service being my watchwords.
As a former Guide and Scot, you will be assured that I will do all necessary to enhance your stay with us at Tulach Ard House.
